What is Vacuum Insulation?
Vacuum is absence of air and has zero thermal conductivity. Only radiation can pass through a vacuum. Vacuum Insulation Board gives outstanding thermal insulation for the thinnest possible solution and are considered the next generation of insulation products. A vacuum insulated panel (VIP) is a form of thermal insulation consisting of a gas-tight enclosure surrounding a rigid core, from which the air has been evacuated. It is used in building construction, refrigeration units, and insulated shipping containers to provide better insulation performance than conventional insulation materials. It has best features in term of insulation performance:
Highest Thermal Efficiency
-
VIPs provide an insulating performance that has a significant improvement over other commonly available insulation materials. Because they rely on the insulation property of a vacuum they can easily achieve low U-values with minimum thickness.
-
Ideal for upgrading insulation during refurbishment. When upgrading thermal performance in an existing building it can often be hard to fit more insulation without adding to construction thickness, which might reduce the amount of daylight into the building or extending the eaves but with VIPs this can be overcome due to the thin nature of the insulation.
-
Reliable long term performance over life time of building.
-
Fits in tight spaces for new builds. VIPs are the perfect solution in areas where lack of construction space or thickness is an issue, for example better insulation can be achieved on a floor without the need to raise skirting boards or radiators and without changing the floor level; excavating the floor or adding in a step at a doorway when adding in a new extension or balcony.
-
Sleek design. Having to incorporate large amounts of space for insulation can often compromise the look and feel of a building, but with VIPs, the same levels of insulation can be achieved which much thinner insulation. Difficult areas, such as dormer windows or balconies which may have gone uninsulated because of lack of space available, can be insulated without having to alter the design of the building.
Manufactured with High Quality Components
-
Membrane walls, used to prevent air from entering the panel.
-
A panel of a rigid, highly-porous material, such as fumed silica, aerogel, perlite, or glass fiber, to support the membrane walls against atmospheric pressure once the air is evacuated.
-
Chemicals (known as getters) to collect gases leaked through the membrane or off gassed from the membrane materials. These are added to VIPs with glass-fiber or foam cores, because cores with bigger pore size require a higher vacuum (less than about 1 mbar) during the planned service life.
6 to 10 Times Lower Thickness Required
The thermal resistance of VIPs per unit thickness compares very favourably to conventional insulation. For instance, standard mineral wool has a thermal conductivity of 0.044 W/(m·K),[6] and rigid polyurethane foam panels about 0.024 W/(m·K). This means that VIPs have about one-fifth the thermal conductivity of conventional insulation, and therefore about five times the thermal resistance (R-value) per unit thickness. Based on a typical k-value of 0.007 W/(m·K), the R-value of a typical 25-millimetre-thick (1 in) VIP would be 3.5 m2·K/W (20 h·ft2·°F/BTU). To provide the same R-value, 154 millimetres (6 in) of rockwool or 84 millimetres (3 in) of rigid polyurethane foam panel would be required.

R value of vacuum insulated panels
R-value represents thermal resistance. We offer vacuum insulated panel with High R-value (4.8 m2K/W per 20mm). Based on a typical thermal conductivity value of 0.007 W/(m·K), the R-value of a typical 25 mm-thick VIP would be 3.5 m2·K/W (20 h·ft²·°F/BTU).
Engineers use measurements such as R-values, U-values, K-values, and C-values to describe insulation performance. All of these measurements quantify performance, but they do so in slightly different ways. When conducting measurements, it’s important to choose the most appropriate metrics for the material, system, or application at hand.

Fumed Silica Vacuum Insulation Panels | WedgeVac FSKW
Fumed silica vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) are a specific type of vacuum insulation panel that incorporates fumed silica, a high-performance insulating material, to achieve excellent thermal insulation properties. Fumed silica is a fine, amorphous powder made of tiny silicon dioxide particles, and it has remarkable insulating qualities due to its low thermal conductivity and high porosity.
In fumed silica vacuum insulation panels, the core material consists of a highly porous, evacuated (vacuum-sealed) space that contains fumed silica. The vacuum inside the panel greatly reduces heat transfer by conduction and convection, while the fumed silica material further inhibits thermal radiation, resulting in superior insulation performance.
Key features and benefits of fumed silica vacuum insulation panels include:
-
High Thermal Resistance: Fumed silica's low thermal conductivity provides excellent insulation properties, allowing for effective heat retention or rejection.
-
Thin Profile: VIPs with fumed silica can achieve high levels of insulation with relatively thin panel thickness, making them suitable for applications where space is limited.
-
Energy Efficiency: These panels can contribute significantly to energy savings by reducing heating and cooling requirements, thus lowering overall energy consumption.
-
Minimal Heat Loss: VIPs with fumed silica have extremely low heat transfer rates, making them ideal for maintaining stable temperatures in various applications.
-
Durability: Fumed silica is chemically stable and resistant to moisture, ensuring the insulation performance remains consistent over time.
